Drywall Finish Levels, Explained: What You're Paying For

Drywall finishers talk about finish levels from 0 to 5. The number describes how much taping and compound work goes into the wall, and it has a big effect on how the wall looks once it's painted.

Level 3 has the tape embedded plus one more coat of compound over the seams, and it's typical for walls that will get a heavy texture. Level 4 adds a second coat over the flat joints and more sanding, and it's the common standard for living spaces with light texture or flat paint.

Level 5 goes further: a thin skim coat over the entire wall, so the paper and the compound share the same surface. It's what you want for smooth walls, glossy paint, or rooms where big windows or grazing light would show every seam.

More finishing means more labor, so the right level depends on the room. We'll recommend the level that fits your texture, paint sheen, and lighting, and put it in the written estimate so you know exactly what you're getting.
